May 27th of every year
is a day set aside in Nigeria tagged children’s
Day. A day that is
observed when we acknowledge and celebrate childhood and
promote awareness
about their welfare.
This year’s
celebration calls for sober reflection as we witness the return of many
children who are
victims of insurgency, abuses, impregnated and now are
refugees in their own
country. While we all eagerly await the return of the
Chibok girls abducted
over a year ago, we must reflect on the gradually eroding
societal value that
calls for the protection of children.
Celebrations should
not be restricted to fun fare but should serve as a wake-up call to parents
and guardians on the
need for protective parentage. It becomes important that
we advocate protection
for all children while warding off vices. Our children
are our tomorrow, our
linear contact, who deserve utmost protection. Today, we
can do much to avert
the re-occurrence of such incidence and future tragedies
by warning children against
immoral acts. We must guide and guard the heart of
our children with
inspiring and motivating words and instructions that would
prepare them ahead of
hurdles of life.
It is universally
recognised that all children are entitled to protection and
education as enshrined
in International Conventions, our own Constitution and the
Child Rights Act
passed by the National Assembly and some states of the
federation. Our best
efforts at survival and development will amount to nothing
if children are continually
abused, as it harms their lives, if such laws are
not enforced.
As a legislator, I
shall continue to give full support to issues affecting the
welfare of children,
promotion of good healthcare and education, particularly
of the Girl child. I
urge all parents to collaborate with the incoming
government by looking
after the welfare of children, providing good nutrition
and ensuring that they
are well bred with essential virtues that will bring out
the best in them as
leaders. This is in the best interest of the society and
nation.
