Idris, Ayorinde, Lawal, Adeniji, Mobereola, others make list
Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has unveiled those who would make his cabinet. Ambode, yesterday presented a list of 37 persons consisting of 23 commissioners and 14 Special Advisers to the State House of Assembly. Out of the 37 nominees, six former cabinet members from the immediate past Babatunde Fasholaadministration were on the list.
They are former Commissioner for Agriculture, Gbolahan Lawal; and former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris; former Special Adviser, Central Business District, Folarin Coker; former Special Adviser, Commerce and Industry, Seye Oladejo; former Special Adviser, Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ganiyu Johnson and former Special Adviser, Rural Development, Babatunde Hunpe. Governor Ambode had during his inaugural address promised to inject new blood on merit and professionalism, adding that his cabinet will be a mixture of technocrats, politicians and strategists.
The governor named a relatively young cabinet with the likes of Mrs. Yetunde Onabolu; Fela Bank-Olemoh; Akinyemi Ashade, a partner in KPMG; former Managing Director, National Mirror, Steve Ayorinde; Alhaja Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf; a pharmacist, Kehinde Joseph and Prof. Ademola Abass, a professor of Law, whose ages range between 39 and 47 years. Other names in the cabinet list include Dr. Akintola Benson, former Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Powers Bureau, Dr. Abdul-Hakeem Abdul-Lateef; Dr. Mohammed Akinkunmi; former member, House of Representatives, Dr. Babatunde Adejare; Dr. Femi Onanuga; Chief Executive Officer of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola; Engr. Ade Akinsanya; and Arch. Wasiu Anifowoshe.
The rest are former member House of Assembly, Mrs. Lola Akande; Agboola Dabiri; Ganiu Okanlomo Sanni; Anofi Elegushi; Rotimi Ogunleye; Mrs Adebimpe Akinsola; Femi Odubiyi; Alhaji Musiliu Folami; Adeniji Kazeem; Adeyemi Labinjo; Toyin Suarau; Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti; Deji Tinubu; Mrs. Mudirat Giwanson and former Chairman Ejigbo Local Council Development Authority (LCDA), Kehinde Bamigbetan and Wale Oluwo. The Clerk of the House, Mr. Ganiyu Abiru, read the names on the floor to members during plenary yesterday. Speaking on the governor’s request for screening and approval, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, said the nominees will undergo screening on the floor of the house. The screening is to commence immediately after the Sallah holidays while cleared cabinet members would be sworn in on Monday, October 5. Mobereola, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), holds a PhD in Transport Economics from the University of Wales, Cardiff. Before his appointment as LAMATA boss, he worked in various firms in the United Kingdom.
Tinubu appointed him Special Assistant on Transport and Head, Lagos Urban Transport Project Office (LUTPO) before his elevation as LAMATA MD. Mobereola is likely going to emerge as Commissioner for Transportation. Ayorinde is a former Daily Editor of The Punch and National Mirror titles.
He later became the Managing Director and Editor-in- Chief of National Mirror. He is the Deputy National President, Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE). It is expected that he will man the Ministry of Information and Strategy. Lawal was an Aide De Camp (ADC) to Senator Bola Tinubu while he served as Lagos State governor. He later served as Commissioner for Agriculture during the Fashola-led administration. Idris, a medical doctor and graduate of University of Lagos and Yale University, was appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health in June 1999. He left the position in 2007 when he was appointed Commissioner for Health, a position he held till May 2015. Mrs. Akande, a Botany graduate from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), is a former Deputy Majority Leader and two-term member of Lagos House of Assembly.
Akande is an elder sister to Senator Oluremi Tinubu. In the build up to the general elections, she stepped down for Hon. James Faleke for the Ikeja federal constituency in the House of Representatives. Abass, a professor of Law, served in the Ambode Campaign Organisation.
He is based in the United States. Kazeem, a lawyer, is a confidant of Governor Ambode. He served as Deputy Director General of the Ambode Campaign Organisation. He is expected to be named Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Johnson, 63, a 1976 engineering graduate from the University of Southern California, United States, has held several portfolios in Lagos State government. He is being tipped as Commissioner for Works. He had been General Manager, New Towns Development Authority (NTDA) and in July 1999, he was seconded to the Lagos State Public Works Bureau also as General Manager.
In May 2003, he was appointed Permanent Secretary and posted to the posted to the Office of Infrastructure. Governor Fashola appointed him as Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure in 2007, the position he occupied till 2015. Oladejo is onetime chairman of Mushin Local Government Area and former Special Adviser to Governor Fashola on Commerce and Industry.
Bamigbetan, a former Political Editor of Punch Newspaper and Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Tinubu, last served as Chairman, Ejigbo Local Community Development Area (LCDA). Dr. Abdul-Lateef, the Chief Imam of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is a former Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Powers Bureau.
Dr. Adejare, a medical doctor, is a former two-term member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and erstwhile member of the House of Representatives. Suarau is a former member of the House of Representatives representing Ojo Federal Constituency, Babatunde Durosinmi- Etti is a former Managing Director of Ibile Holdings. Deji Tinubu is a former member of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Bank-Olemoh, a sports analyst, is the Chief Executive Officer of Media- Vision.
