‘Support for Jonathan crippled free expression in Southeast’

De-risking Africa: Goodluck Ebele JonathanDEPUTY National Secretary of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Jerry Obasi, has said Ndigbo expect apologies and expression of gratitude from former President Goodluck Jonathan, pointing out that “because of support for Jonathan, politics in Igbo land was greatly affected.”
Obasi, who made the observation in an interaction with The Guardian against a backdrop of recent mass defection of eminent personalities from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), disclosed that the bandwagon support by certain Igbo leaders for Jonathan crippled free expression and unsettled the political climate in the Southeast.
He said because of Jonathan’s interest, the wishes of the people were subverted while popular political leaders were rendered irrelevant.
His words: “In my opinion, Jonathan did not show reciprocal support for Ndigbo; he was merely interested in getting our votes without any interest in the sanity of our politics. In Niger Delta, some people who opposed Jonathan were denied tickets to pave the way for his supporters to contest election. But in Igbo land especially in Anambra State, not even a single person was allowed to win a seat in either the House of Representatives or Senate.
