Is YOUR penis 'good looking'? Medical study reveals what women really rate as important

It's an age-old question that worries many a man - what constitutes a 'normal' looking penis?
Now, scientists have revealed what women rate as being important - and it may surprise you.

Overall cosmetic appearance was rated as the most essential factor, followed by the appearance of pubic hair and skin around the genital area.
While girth was considered the joint third most important aspect, women only rated length as the sixth most vital asset.

Rated as the least important aspect of a penis' appearance was the position and shape of the urethral opening, where urine leaves the body (defined as the meatus, in medical terminology).

The men in the new study had undergone surgery for hypospadias, and the researchers were keen to find out if women could spot the difference between penises that had undergone surgery and those that had not.

However the doctors, from the University Children’s Hospital, in Zurich, Switzerland, were also keen to get women's views on what constitutes a 'good looking' penis in any man.

Their study, entitled 'What Is a Good Looking Penis', has been published in the latest issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
First, it was ascertained that the genitals of men who underwent surgery were considered as normal-looking as non-affected, circumcised genitals.
HOW RESEARCHERS SOUGHT TO DEFINE A GOOD LOOKING PENIS
In the questionnaire, the women were also asked how important they considered eight different aspects of a penis on a 5-point scale ranging from very unimportant (1) to very important (5).

They were:
Penile length, penile girth, position and shape of the meatus, shape of glans, appearance of scrotum, shape of penile skin, appearance of pubic hair, and general cosmetic appearance;

They researchers also discovered what women regard as important for overall appearance.
This was done by getting 105 women of different age groups (16-20, 25-30, and 40-45 years) to complete a standardised questionnaire.

In it, the women were asked to rate the importance of eight penile aspects, including girth, length and cosmetic appearance.

They were also asked to indicate how normal they found the appearance of two sets of photos - one of men who'd had surgery for hypospadias and one of men with circumcised genitals.

Circumcised men were chosen as controls because the absence of a foreskin means they have a similar penile appearance to men with corrected hypospadias.

Furthermore, the women were asked about about their sexuality and age.

The results showed that most women were unable to tell if a man had undergone surgery for hypospadias - and the older and more sexually active a woman had been, the more accepting of the procedure she was.
Length was also less of an issue for these women.

Considered of least importance was the position of the meatus - the opening where urine leaves the body. This is significant for men who have suffered hypospadias because the meatus is affected.

In the questionnaire, the women were asked how important they considered eight different aspects of a penis on a 5-point scale ranging from very unimportant (1) to very important (5).

The were penile length, penile girth, position and shape of the meatus, shape of glans, appearance of scrotum, shape of penile skin, appearance of pubic hair, and general cosmetic appearance.

As displayed in the table above, 'general cosmetic appearance' was rated as the the most important factor, while  'penile length' was ranked sixth, and the 'position and shape of meatus' last.

The researchers say the length finding 'confirms previous studies which have found most women find penile size “unimportant” or even “totally unimportant” and that most women are satisfied with their partner’s penis size'.
In addition, men should know that women look rather at the overall genital appearance than at individual penile aspects such as the position and shape of the meatus or penile size.

Earlier this year, scientists revealed what is considered 'normal' for penis size and length.
The average length of an erect penis is 5.2 inches (13.12 cm), they found.

Meanwhile, the average length of a flaccid penis is 3.6 inches (9.16 cm) and 5.2 inches (13.24 cm) when flaccid but stretched.

And when it comes to girth, the average erect circumference was 4.6 inches (11.66 cm) and 3.7 inches (9.31 cm) when flaccid.
The British research also found there was a small correlation between the erect length of a penis and a man's height.

The study could help to counsel men worried about their size, or with investigations into how condom failure relates to penis size and girth.
Some men are concerned about their penis size, and those who are preoccupied and severely distressed may even be diagnosed with BDD.
