Following numerous economic challenges facing
Nigeria, governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday disclosed that
the country is currently undergoing a very difficult economic situation.
Speaking to
newsmen during a book launch titled: ‘’Restoring good governance in Nigeria:
Leadership and political will’’ written by Goke
Adegoroye,
el-Rufai noted that apart from the fact that the country is broke, Nigeria is
heavily indebted.
President
Muhammadu Buhari recently described as a disgrace a situation whereby his
administration inherited an empty treasury at a time when debts running into
several hundreds of millions of dollars had piled up, with the federal and
state governments unable to pay workers salaries.
El-Rufai
stated that at this crucial time the government should use this significant
opportunity for positive changes and reforms.
According to
him, “The country is in a very difficult situation which in my opinion apart
from the country being broke, we are heavily indebted and all prices are low
and more, but it is a significant opportunity for change and reform.’’
He said, ‘’It
is clear to many governors and the federal government that we have to overhaul
the structure and machinery of government, many of us are merging ministries
and the federal government is doing the same based on the upshot of the report
of the Transition Committee.
‘’So I think
that the current difficulty provide opportunity to renew the public service,
restructure government and reduce the cost of running the government and I
think President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration and all of us will use the
opportunity to get it back,’’ he emphasized.
He said that
the book will make civil service more effective and will go a long way in
helping government reforms.
Reviewing the
book, Prof. Ladipo Adamolekun, recommended the book to, ‘’politicians and
public servants who have the challenge of responding to the unfolding change
promised by President Muhammadu Buhari.
