Unknown to many,
former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the former governor of Oyo State, Alhaji
Rashidi Ladoja were part of the intrigues that paved the way for Senator Bukola
Saraki to emerge as the Senate President during election for the post last
Tuesday, Newspot Nigeria can report.
This revelation is
coming as a process of reconciliation between the factions of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) on the crises generated by elections of National
Assembly leadership has reached advanced stage with President Muhammadu
Buhari’s intervention.
Interestingly, former
President Obasanjo was not in Nigeria when the struggle for enthroning Saraki
as Senate President got to the head, yet he was able to pull the strings from
his base outside through telephone to fix the problem for Saraki.
State governors who
also decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the APC also raised
a bloc of support for Saraki, while the former Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was said to be chief plotter of Saraki’s
victory.
An insider in the
power game in the Senate hinted Newspot Nigeria exclusively that it was rather
Ladoja who sought the intervention of Obasanjo on realizing that Senator Ahmed
Lawan was going to win going by the support APC threw behind him, anchored on
the wish of Senator Bola Tinubu.
Ladoja as explained
put a call across to the former President for intervention, while the latter in
turn got in touch with former Senate President, David Mark with suggestions
that he should rally the PDP forces in support of Saraki.
The fear of enormous
influence being wielded by Tinubu over the government of President Muhammadu
Buhari has been the reason the major forces in both the APC and PDP fused to
frustrate the plans to make Lawam clink the post of Senate President.
According to reports,
the last minute reconciliation between Saraki and David Mark few hours to
the election of the Senate President, was indeed facilitated by Obasanjo.
With the nature of
power balance in the Senate as at now, David Mark who is now an ordinary member
of the Senate has become a rallying force with indications that he will be more
relevant in the scheme of things in the Senate given his long years of
experience as a Senator.
The former House of Representatives
Speaker, now the governor of Sokoto state, had last week dropped the hint of
his involvement in the emergence of Saraki as Senate President when he openly
thanked those he worked with to determine who will lead the National Assembly.
Tambuwal made this
known at the Sheraton Hotel Abuja venue of a Special Dinner he organised in
honour of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, his immediate predecessor in
office.
He said the victories
by Saraki and Dogara as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker
may not have been possible without the roles played by some APC governors and
like minds in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
