Controversy is trailing the cancellation of the election result for Brass Constituency 2 by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the rescheduled Brass Constituency 2 and Ogbia Constituency 2 election it conducted last Saturday for the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
While the Returning Officer for the Brass 2, Perekere Bertola, a lecturer at the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, on Sunday morning, announced the candidate of APGA, Alfred Belemote Watson, winner, INEC declared the election inconclusive and accused Bertola of making “conflicting declarations”.

INEC in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Timidi Wariowei, said the Brass 2 election was inconclusive but upheld the victory of PDP candidate, Anapurere Awoli, for Ogbia 2, which was also rejected by the APC candidate, Tonye Okio.
Wariowei said: “The suspension of the result was due to the conflicting declarations by the Returning Officer and the circumstances surrounding the declarations.
“The reports by the Returning Officer have been compiled for the attention and further directives of the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.”
It was, however, believed in some quarters that Governor Seriake Dickson may have influenced the cancellation of the Brass 2 polls.
Manager of Alfred Watson Campaign Organisation, Felix Bapaganyo, said INEC’s action was a calculated attempt to subvert the will of the people.
He said APGA’s leadership in the state had petitioned the chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega, over the commission’s decision to upturn the Returning Officer’s verdict.
Despite Watson’s rejection of INEC’s cancellation of Brass 2 election result, the state chapter of the PDP on Wednesday commended the commission for nullifying the Brass 2 election result.
