Apparently disturbed
by the myriads of crises that has almost torn the ruling Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) apart, a political group known as “The PDP Core Supporters Network”
has issued a two-week ultimatum to President Goodluck Jonathan to resolve the crisis
in the party and to immediately lift the suspension of Governor Rotimi Amaechi
of Rivers State from the party and accord him recognition as the duly elected
chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).
The group warned that
should the president fail to do this, they will withdraw their support for his
(Jonathan’s) presidential ambition.
The group, in a press
statement signed by its National Secretary, Mallam Mohammed Hashidu, disclosed
that Nigerians are tired of the current crises in the ruling party, saying it
will hinder delivery of dividends of democracy to Nigerians and is unhealthy
for the nation’s peace, unity and development.
He said, “As far as
we, the members of the group are concerned, there is a big crack in PDP which
needs an immediate and proactive resolution for the betterment of all in the
party, also for the party to maintain its leadership in the comity of political
parties in Africa. We are tired of the continued quagmire that abounds in the
party, which not only hinders proper delivery of dividends of democracy in all
ramifications but also threatens the unity, love and peaceful co-existence of
our beloved great country.”
Hashidu urged
President Goodluck Jonathan and leadership of the party, under Alhaji Bamaga
Tukur, to as a matter of urgency resolve the crisis before the end of October
or the group would withdraw its support for the party in 2015.
Hashidu called for the
immediate reversal of the dissolution of the party executives in Adamawa,
Rivers and Kano state chapters of PDP, stressing the need to allow for popular
participation of internal democracy within the party in order to further deepen
the nation’s democracy for other parties to emulate.
According to him,
“There should be no automatic ticket for the offices of the President and
Governors, as being proposed by the PDP BoT Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih. Also
there is need to ensure free, fair, credible and transparent primary elections
at all
levels.”
The group faulted the
extra judicial killings of innocent Nigerians by security agencies, especially
the most recent Apo killing. It alleged that DSS personnel were behind the
killings of the innocent victims, whom it mistook for members of Boko Haram and
called for investigation into the incessant extra judicial killings in the
country.
Hashidu berates the
federal government for its inability to resolve the ASUU strike, saying “No
serious government can afford to play with the education of its citizenry,
therefore it implored the federal government to put more effort and consider in
totality the agreement already reached between it and ASUU two years back in
order to save the education from total collapse.”
