The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday
wooed Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State to join its fold.
APC Vice-Chairman in North-East, Umar Duhu
said during a courtesy call to the governor that Adamawa State is more of APC
than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Duhu said the visit to the governor was at the
instance of the APC National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.
Duhu said: “Adamawa is an APC state. The
governor perhaps might not be a card-carrying member of our party, but all his
supporters are members of our party. So, Adamawa State Government is APC
controlled-government.”
He said before the merger of the All Nigeria
Peoples Party (ANPP) with other political parties to form the APC, many members
of the PDP had joined the then ANPP.
“Many People in this government left the PDP
enmasse; about 300,000 of them to join the ANPP, and I received them as the then
chairman of the ANPP and I gave them membership card of the ANPP, except the
governor, who said he was still in talks with his colleagues. Very soon he
(Nyako) is going to join the ship because he no longer fits into the system of
the PDP,” he said.
Duhu described political development in the
polity as in shambles because the PDP government was trying “to
institutionalise impunity.”
He added that the closure of the Adamawa State
Government Lodge in Abuja was synonymous to closing the Government Gouse in
Yola.
Duhu pointed out that there was no moral
justification for the Federal Government to shut the lodge whereas the Aso
Villa continues to be used for the meeting of the PDP.
He called for the closure of the Aso Villa
also by the police, even as he asked the Inspector-General of Police to order
the reopening of the lodge.
In his response, Nyako expressed admiration
for the APC and said he would soon make his pronouncement on whether to join
the fold public.
He, however, said the party has his support.
The governor said the people of Adamawa State
would not allow “mediocre in Abuja” to determine their political future, noting
that the era when few Adamawa indigenes operating from Abuja determining the
fate of the state was over.
He commended the APC as a political party and
the feat achieved by the governors elected on the party platform.
Nyako said: “I don’t have your card, yet but I
admire your governors for their outstanding performance. In the North-East,
Governors of Yobe and Borno state have shown sterling qualities, delivering
dividends of democracy to their people despite the security challenges faced by
their states.
“Also, the South-West governors are doing well
on the platform of the same political party.”
