FRESH details have emerged from a horrifying incident at Spain's Alicante
Airport, where a five-month-old baby was crushed to death in a baggage
carousel.
The baby's mother has
been identified as 32-year-old American accountant Nathania Terry.
The Daily Mail spoke to Mrs Terry's uncle, who said his family was
devastated by the tragic incident.
"The family is
going through a difficult situation right now," he said.
According to police, Mrs
Terry climbed onto the baggage carousel to retrieve a baby
stroller while holding her son. Mrs Terry accidentally caused the belt to
start, and she lost her grip on the baby, who fell onto the moving carousel.
"The mother left
the baby on the conveyor belt, which can be activated by detecting weight or by
an airport employee," a spokesman for the Spanish Guardia Civil said.
"It seems that the
baby carrier's weight activated the belt and the child was trapped in the
rollers in the drop zone."
Airport staff said the
accident happened in seconds. Mrs Terry had no time to react, and could only
scream in horror as her baby was killed. Medical staff could not revive the
child, and he was declared dead at the scene.
Mrs Terry and her
Canadian husband were reportedly en route to the resort town of Denia for a
vacation. The Daily Mail says the couple is staying at the hotel where they
previously planned to holiday, awaiting the outcome of a Spanish police
investigation.
Family members have
visited the distraught couple, and The British Red Cross has sent both a
psychologist and a social worker for support.
