A Robert Mugabe gay rant gave some idea of what LGBT individuals can expect should the former Zimbabwe president
be reelected.
According
to Zimbabwe’s NewsDay, at a recent campaign rally, the opponent of
homosexuality indicated he would deal harshly with the act should he win his
country’s support.
“If you take men and lock them in a house for five years and tell them to come
up with two children and they fail to do that, then we will chop off their
heads,” Mugabe said, adding that African countries who accepted the practice
were “succumbing to European countries in exchange for aid,” the report stated.
“We
need continuity of our culture. This culture comes from the norm that women
carry pregnancies for nine months. If there is anyone who disputes that, he
should lift up his hands to say, ‘No, I fell from heaven,’” Mugabe said.
“This
thing [homosexuality] seeks to destroy our lineage by saying John and John
should wed, Maria and Maria should wed. Imagine this son born out of an African
father. [US President Barack] Obama says if you want aid, you should accept the
homosexuality practice. Aah, we will never do that,” the Robert Mugabe gay rant
continued.
Drawing
from President Obama’s African heritage and acceptance of homosexuality, Robert
Mugabe said, “We ask, was he born out of homosexuality? We need continuity in
our race, and that comes from the woman, and no to homosexuality.”
Mugabe
also noted that LGBT individuals were “worse than dogs and pigs.”
“I keep
pigs and the male pig knows the female one,” Huffington Post noted Mugabe as
saying.
At
the turn of the millennium, the former Zimbabwe president began seizing farms
owned by whites. The move destroyed investors’ confidence in the country. It
also paralyzed production and prompted international sanctions. The country
also saw a steep drop in tourists visiting.Coincidentally, it was reported earlier this year that the country’s bank balance was around $217.
Robert Mugabe was/is a polarizing figure, who has reportedly
been a target for removal before from individuals like (allegedly) entrepreneur Richard Branson.
