The
Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, has called on people of Rivers
State to commence recall processes of their representatives from the State’s
House of Assembly should the Federal House of Representatives take over its
functions.
Speaking on Sunday in Buguma,
the headquarters of Asari-Toru Local Government Area of the state at the
inauguration of the ward executives of his Grassroots Democratic Initiative
(GDI), Wike said the action of the House of Representatives would indicate that
governance had collapsed in the state.
The minister, who also urged
the people of the state to vote en masse for the re-election of President
Goodluck Jonathan in the upcoming 2015 presidential election, told the people
that he would not be intimidated by the strength of his political opponents in
the state.
Meanwhile, the terror and panic
trailing the ongoing crisis in Rivers State manifested itself Friday evening
and Sunday in Buguma town when members GDI clashed with those in support of the
council chairman, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree and those of the Speaker of the State
House of Assembly, Otelema Dan-Amachree.
Although there was no loss of
life, Nigerian Tribune gathered that several persons sustained various degrees
of injuries as all manners of weapons, including stones, bottles and knives
were alleged to have been freely used on Friday. The same scenario re-occurred
Sunday, following the visit of the minister.
Sources informed that it took
the intervention of men of the Joint Task Force (JTF), to quell the fights on
both occasions.
