•Urges Nigerians to condemn
impunity
Archbishop Emeritus of Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos,
Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has expressed displeasure over the recent brawl in the
Rivers State House of Assembly.
Okogie,
in a statement in Lagos on Sunday, said the act of turning the hallowed chamber
into a battlefield by the lawmakers was unexpected of their personalities.
The
statement said the crisis was shameful and should be condemned by every
right thinking Nigerian.
“I
condemn the crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly. More importantly, it
is very disappointing to see our so-called honourables exchanging blows like
gangsters.
“Such an
act, if not checkmated, is an invitation to terrorism and gangsterism
“I call
on every right thinking Nigerian to rise and speak against such unruly conduct
by men who are supposed to be making laws of our land.
“It is
unfortunate that the lawmakers who are expected to be men and women of
integrity have allowed themselves to be used as pawns. They are supposed to be
masses-oriented,” the cleric added.
While
commending the House of Representatives for declaring legislative emergency in
the state, Okogie believes that such a step was necessary to safeguard the
integrity of governance in the country.
He also
said those found culpable in the fracas should be made to face the wrath of the
law.
