A Norwegian woman
raped in Dubai has been sentenced to 16 months for having sex outside of
marriage.
The 25-year-old was in
the United Arab Emirates city for business meetings in March when she was
violently sexually assaulted.
She reported the
incident to cops.
But, instead of
investigating her case, they seized her passport and placed her under arrest.
The Norwegian
Consulate in Dubai eventually negotiated her release and the woman was placed
under the protection of the local Norwegian Sailor's Church.
Thrown in a jail cell
for several days, she was banned from using a phone.
The Norwegian
Consulate eventually negotiated her release and she was placed under the
protection of the local Norwegian Sailor's Church.
But she now faces an
uncertain future after being sentenced this week, reports the Norway Post.
It is not yet known
whether she has returned to jail or will be allowed to return to Norway to
serve her time.
"I received the
harshest sentence for sex outside marriage, harshest sentence for drinking
alcohol and on top of that I was found guilty of perjury," she is reported
as saying.
