HUMAN rights campaigners have attacked Jennifer Lopez's sizeable
and lucrative legacy, accusing the star of accepting money from "some of
the world's worst thugs".
The Human Rights
Foundation (HRF) estimates up to $US10 million of Lopez's fortune could be
attributed to "serenading crooks and dictators", the Independent reports .
The extraordinary blast
comes after Lopez performed last month for Turkmenistan leader Gurbanguly
Berdymukhamedov for a fee of $2.5 million.
She later pleaded
ignorance about the regime's poor human rights record. But the HRF says Lopez
is a repeat offender when it comes to entertaining "the world's worst
thugs and their cronies".
"This is not about
ignorance, it's about greed," said HRF president Thor Halvorssen.
"The collective
outrage that now follows Lopez's behaviour is a categorical signal that it is
not right to enjoy a free society, and then seek to profit from those who have
acquired their riches from cronyism and the wholesale negation of human
rights."
The HRF claims Lopez was
paid $1 million to perform for Uzbek businessman Azam Aslanov, an oil magnate
accused of rampant corruption.
She was also reportedly
paid $2.5 million to sing in Azerbaijan last year and offered another $2 million
to sing for Russian Alexander Yolkin before he was arrested on corruption
charges.
