ABUJA—THE National University Commission, NUC, Wednesday blamed
the rot in the education sector on the takeover of public and missionary
schools shortly after the Nigeria-Biafran civil war in the seventies. Executive
Secretary of the NUC, Professor Julius Okojie who made this known also said
that the abolition of boarding schools as well as 30 years of military
rule contributed to high level of indiscipline and decay in the system.
Okojie spoke when he received a letter of intent from the family
of the former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida for approval to
establish El-Amin University in Niger State.
Late wife of the former Head of State, Hajia Miriam Babangida
had established El-Amin International School which was reputed for quality
standard about 20 years ago and as a matter of continuity, the family
represented by Dr. Mohammed Babangida presented the application to the
Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie in Abuja to float the proposed
university.
