Leader of a gang of kidnappers that has being terrorising residents of Lagos, identified as Taiwo Adulujo, said he received N1.5m as his own share of the ransom paid to his gang for kidnapping a Chinese expatriate and staff of ZTE Nigeria Limited. The victim, Kuang Mungjun, was allegedly kidnapped from his Osbornde Estate, Ikoyi residence in June this year by a 14-man kidnap group and was taken away to Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos. The gang leader, who was a staff of ZTE, was said to have connived with the victim’s driver to carry out the crime.
“I got N1.5m from a total of about N8.5 million that was paid as ransom by friends of the victim. I sponsored my younger sister with part of the money I got while I bought a Toyota Camry with some of the money. I was at the verge of buying a plot of land with a member of the gang when I was arrested by the police,” he added.
The 32-year old cab driver alleged that it was the driver of the victim identified as Ufot Akaniyene, who provided the gang with useful information that aided that kidnap. “Akaniyene is the driver to the Chinese. He provided us with useful information and he got N700,000 as part of his share of the deal,” he added.
Taiwo alleged that he was moved to kidnap the Chinese based on what he described as the unlawful dismissal of one man, whom he identified simply as “Papa” by management of the company and the alleged refusal of the company to pay the old man his entitlements. “The old man was only given N15,000 after he was relieved of his duty,” he stated.
He added, “We initially demanded for the sum of N35 million from management of the company. They refused to pay a dime on the ground that the victim was not kidnapped inside the company’s premises and that the incident did not occur on a working day. It was his friends who put together the sum of N8.5 million that was paid to us, “ he stated.
Parading the suspects yesterday at the command headquarters, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, stated that on July 3, one Aduloju Taiwo and Jimoh Olalere were arrested at Elemoro area of Ibeju Leki in connection with the kidnap of one Kingsley Ifeanyi.
