The Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has said pupils in the state public schools can compete academically with their counterparts in private schools.
A statement on Monday said Fashola made this remarks at the grand finale of the Bright Rewarding Future quiz competition for primary, junior and senior secondary schools.
Fashola said, “The pupils in both our primary and secondary schools in the state can compete favourably with their counterparts in the private schools. You don’t judge a book by its cover.
“Our pupils have contested with pupils from private schools in this competition and they survived all the preliminaries and got to the final, while the private schools have fallen by the way side.”
Fashola, who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye added that the competition, was aimed at creating healthy rivalry among school children in primary, junior and senior secondary schools.
Fashola said his administration had invested a lot in both infrastructural developments and the payment of pupils’ examination fees for the West African Examination Council and National Examination Council.
Advising winners not to rest on their oars, the governor said the competition would spur pupils to great heights in their academics.
A former state commissioner for Education, Dr. Leke Pitan, said he was impressed by the quiz master’s doggedness and the pupils determination and brilliance.
For the nursery/primary school category, Ansaruddeen Nursery Primary School, Ebute Meta, came first, while Our Lady of Fatimah Nursery Primary School clinched second position.
Lagos State Model College, Kankon, Badagry, topped the junior secondary school category.
For the senior secondary school, Eletu Odibo Senior Secondary School, Yaba came first, while Sanmori Comprehensive senior Secondary School, Ifako, Agege, clinched second position.
The pupils who represented the winning schools went home with a tablet each, while their schools got trophies
