Crime in England and
Wales has fallen by a further 9% over the past year according to official
survey results published Thursday.
Statisticians say this
latest fall brings the crime rate down to its lowest level since the survey
began in 1981, The Guardian reports and it has reached less than half
its peak level it reached in 1995.
Separate figures of
crime recorded by the police confirmed the significant drop. Crime fell 7% in
the 12 months to March 2013 to 3.7m offenses.
The Office for
National Statistics said the fall in crime has continued a
trend of recent years. The rate, however, was slower than was seen in the
1990s.
Prime MInister David
Cameron has praised the "magnificent" work of the police, The Telegraph reports.
Over the last year, the
number of reported rapes has risen 2% with the increase thought to be linked to
the Jimmy Saville investigation.
Fraud has also risen by
27%, but overall crime is down by 9%.
There has been a 15%
drop in car theft, a 7% fall in burglary, a 6% fall in violent crime, and a 13%
drop in vandalism, The Guardian reports.
The number of police
officers in England and Wales have fallen for the fourth year in a row, by more
than 3% or 4,516 , taking it to its lowest level since 2002, The Telegraph reports.
