THE
national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamaga Tukur,
on Wednesday, disowned a statement made on his behalf by his media assistant,
Mr Oliver Okpala, against the five PDP northern state governors who paid a
visit to President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa over the crises
rocking the party.
The affected governors were Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Murtala Nyako
(Adamawa), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Babangida
Aliyu of Niger State.
In two different statements signed by the acting national
secretary of the party, Dr Charles Aderemi Akitoye and another aide to Tukur,
Alhaji Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gommbe, made available to newsmen in Abuja, on
Wednesday, Alhaji Tukur, who is currently in Saudi Arabia, said he found the
statement not only embarrassing, but counter-productive.
The governors, during their visit to President Jonathan on
Sunday, were said to have allegedly demanded for the removal of Alhaji Tukur as
the national chairman of the party, as a condition for peace to reign.
In a swift reaction on Tuesday, the media assistant to Tukur
issued a statement on his behalf, said while they had their inalienable rights
to hold opinions, they ought to exercise such with restraint, decorum and
humility.
However, the statement by Alhaji Gara said Tukur was
“infuriated, particularly when the media assistant singled out five northern
governors who were invited by the president for consultations in Abuja.”
He said there was no way the national chairman would have
condemned the governors, stressing that Alhaji Tukur was ready for any
initiative towards reconciliation by party members.
Dr Akitoye denounced the statement, saying “the press
release does not represent the thought and actions of the national chairman.”
