Another win for Mugabe?

A senior source in Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's party claimed a resounding victory in Wednesday's parliamentary and presidential election against Prime Minster Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

"We've taken this election. We've buried the MDC. We never had any doubt that we were going to win," the source, who could not be named, told Reuters by phone on Thursday.

Releasing results early in Zimbabwe is illegal, and police have said they will arrest anybody who makes premature claims about the result.

Counting was underway in Zimbabwe's tightly fought election Wednesday, amid high turnout and accusations of rigging by President Robert Mugabe's allies who wish to extend his 33-year rule. Unofficial results are already trickling in on social media.

Vote tallying and counting started immediately after the close of polls and results for council, parliament and president will be posted posted outside each polling station.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will announce winners for parliament in their constituencies, while results for president will be announced at the commission's headquarters in Harare within five days of voting.

A presidential candidate requires 50 percent plus one vote for an outright win. In the event no candidate gets that, a run-off will be held on September 11 between the top two contestants.
